  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk

  • Coarse salt
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • Butter for serving

Directions
  1. Cut the bread diagonally into 3/4-inch-thick slices and place in one or more dishes large enough to hold the slices in a single layer.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla, milk, beer and a pinch of salt.
  3. Pour over the bread slices, turning to soak both sides.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or at least 1 hour.
  5. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  6. In a very large ovenproof skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
