Pastitsio- Greek Baked Pasta Recipe
A Greek dish my Mum makes- it is greaaaat! Love the cinnamon in it- gives it something special...

Ingredients
  • olive oil
  • brown onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 500g lamb mince
  • 400g can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 250g dried macaroni pasta
  • 80g butter
  • 1/3 cup plain flour
  • 2 1/4 cups skim milk
  • 2/3 cup tasty cheese, grated
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions
  1. Heat oil over medium heat in frying pan. Add onion and garlic and cook til soft.
  2. Add mince and cook, stirring often for 5 mins til browned.
  3. Stir tomato, wine, tomato paste, oregano and cinnamon into mince mixture.
  4. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Bring to boil and reduce heat. Simmer 25 mins or until thick. Cool.
  6. Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling salted water. Drain and return to pan. Stir meat sauce into pasta.
  7. Preheat oven to 180degC. Grease 8 cup capacity lasagna dish.
  8. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add flour and stir til bubbling
  9. Remove from heat and slowly add milk, stirring til smooth.Return to heat and stir constantly, until mixture comes to the boil.
  10. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 mins or until thickened. Add cheese and stir til melted.
  11. Cool for 10mins. Stir egg into sauce.
  12. Spoon meat and pasta into prepared pan. Pour cheese sauce over and spread evenly.
  13. bake for 40-45mins or until golden.
  14. Stand 10 mins before serving.

Yum! One of my favorite dishes. Thank you. I add raisins to the meat mixture, & ground nutmeg to the white sauce.
