Curried Yellow Split Pea Stew In A Crock Pot by DetroitTokyo

This is delicious! We all LOVED it!
The spices were perfect and spot on. Almost like an Indian Dahl recipe, but I like this better because it uses yellow curry powder.
Instead of all yellow split peas, I used a "soup mix". It consists of yellow and green split peas, red split lentils, rice and barley. I knew I would never find a recipe that used all those exact ingredients, so I thought to look for a lentil or split pea soup that used some of them and follow that recipe. All the peas and lentils fell apart and made it a creamy stew, with a bit of texture from the rice and barley. Because of the rice and barley in my soup mix, I did use more liquid, instead of 5 cups veggie broth I used 7.6 cups, a total of two cartons of veggie broth (900mls each).
It was so warming and comforting, a great winter stew! I could see making this weekly or bi-weekly in the colder months. I would prefer it over a meat chili even!
I served it with cilantro, yogurt and naan bread. Because of the earthy spices, I think the cilantro is almost crucial. If you don't like cilantro, then I would add some fresh lemon or lime juice to perk things up at the end, or even some fresh chopped scallions.
A perfect vegetarian meal that even my meat-loving family really loved! :)

What a beautiful bowl of stew Shona! Love the colors :) I have not made split peas in forever, and I guess now is the time when it's not too hot yet! All of Dahlia's recipes I have tried are amazing, Bookmarking :-)

    Thanks Michelle!
I think this would be great with any kind of split-peas, or split lentils. :)

I also love that this is a slow cooker recipe! I forgot to mention that above. I cooked it on high for 4 hours, and low for 1 hour. And thought that worked out perfect as all the peas and lentils had broken down by then.
