French Canadian Tourtiere

    French Canadian Tourtiere by Gaspesiangal

I had meant to make this on Christmas eve, but had it early instead! So, I thought to post it on Christmas eve instead, lol ;)
I love the pickling spice in this, such a great idea! I wish Bren was still around as I would have asked her so many questions about the directions. I looked to other recipes to see about directions. Some saute the meat and veg first etc. But I thought to do what Bren said in the directions and put it in a pot with water to cover. But I think I added way too much water! I cooked it for over an hour, and there still seemed to be too much water. But i went ahead and added the bread crumbs- hoping it was a correct amount of moisture. It baked up just fine and held it's shape, but a little too moist for me. Next time I will cook it in a saute pan and only add a little water. I baked it at 400F for 15 min, then at 375F for approx. 35 mins. I also added an egg wash to the pastry.
My husband loved it!! The kids weren't thrilled about the sweeter spices, like the extra allspice and cloves. So I will adjust that next time (there's plenty in the pickling spice). And I think I would like it better with all pork, like Bren does. I used 1lb beef, 2lb pork. This makes two pies. So I liked the idea of making 2 ahead of time and having leftovers. The leftovers tasted even better, and I even liked it cold from the fridge. I served it with mixed pickled vegetables, salad, and loaded mine with plain ol' ketchup! I took pictures of the leftover cold pie, but now I see I should have dressed the plate with vegetables to make it look more appetizing, lol. :)

I too have never had a tourtiere, yours really did hold it's shape well, even if it was a little too wet. I don't know if my kiddos would go for this at all, they are really just not that big of meat eaters, but my husband would totally devour it :)

    Thanks everyone! :)
It's very much like an English pork pie with a flaky pastry vs a thicker hot water crust. What vary's the most between all tourtiere/meat pie recipes are the spices. I thought about making my DH one pie just to have for work lunches, he really gets tired of sandwiches and this is great warm or cold. :)
