    French Onion Dip by RecipeDiva

We really enjoyed this! It tasted so much better than a store bought French onion dip. And it's so easy to make!
This was one of the only onion dip recipes on here to use Worcestershire sauce. It gave it that "beefy" umami flavour, like a French onion soup has--without using a powdered Onion Soup mix. It had a nice creaminess, held up well to dipping and the perfect balance of richness from the mayo and tartness from the sour cream.
Next time I'd like to try a sweet onion, Vidalia or Walla Walla, instead of a yellow onion, and maybe add something green to it like fresh chives or a herb. But it was certainly delicious as written!
I just served this with potato chips, but I think fresh crudité would be lovely too!

I don't like the store-bought Kraft one, Shona. It is actually nasty IMHO. I bought a small container of it the other day and I am sorry I did. This looks and sounds so much better. Great pic as always! I make the sour creme one with the dried onion mix and it is way better than the Kraft one and this recipe sounds delightful as well.

Thanks Joce! I usually buy the Helluva brand or the Philly brand. I wonder if the Philly is the same as the Kraft one you bought? I've bought some nasty ones in the past, French onion is a hard one to get right-- sometimes too salty or too fake of a caramelized onion taste. I could see the onion soup mix and sour cream being much better than store-bought too! :)

You are right it isn't Kraft it is Philly and it is weird doesn't even seem like cream cheese. Kinda gloopy and fake taste weird. I think I am going to pitch it. I have had Helluva brand and it is much better.

My Dad ALWAYS has the store bought (store brand too) onion dip out at get together's and it is horrible! This sounds so much better, and looks so much better too :)

Nice photo, Cosmicmother! I used to love French Onion when I was growing up and mom always kept some in the fridge for chips. Like everyone else, I find the store bought stuff nasty. Nothing tastes like it did 40yrs ago. Now I like green onion dip better. Philly has a Cream Cheese and Chive that I really like. It's a spread and is too thick to be used as a chip dip. Works fine for thick Wavy Lays potato chips.

Thanks Michelle, you should bring this dip over to him next time! It really is so easy to make. I have to laugh because some of the no name or store brand things my Dad eats irks me, I wonder if they lose their tastes buds as they get older? Lol ;)

Thanks Diz! It must be the preservatives or flavour enhancers they put in there? I understand they want their refrigerated dips to last long at the grocery store so the stores will buy them. But what has always bothered me are the shelf-stable dips I see in the chip aisle, how can "creamy dips" be shelf stable?...it's weird....I've never wanted to try those! lol ;)

Nice photo Shona! Wow, French Onion dip was a must on Saturday night when my parents had another family over to play cards when we were kids. However my mom used sour cream and soup mix. I bet this was a thousands times better! Yum!
