Greek Meat Sauce

This is the sauce I'm making for Pasticcio this weekend.

    **Greek Meat Sauce by Nikchick**

I just had to post it in IMI now as the smell is so intoxicating! It smells exactly like the sauce at my favorite Greek Restaurant and so I had to indulge in a few taste testing's! And sure enough it's tastes just like the restaurant version. And it can only get better as it sits in the fridge overnight!!
I've made other Greek sauces at home but never one that came close to the restaurants', so this is my go to for now on! Other recipes I have tried included cinnamon as well but they used cloves or nutmeg instead of allspice. I think allspice is the secret I've been looking for!
This sauce is great over spaghetti or other pasta, and I've used it in Mousakka. But I haven't tried it in pastitsio/pasticchio yet. (it looks just like the Inside Out Ravioli I made awhile back) But I'm sure with this sauce and the béchamel it will be a hit! (I'll add that review to IMI this weekend!)
If you haven't tried a Greek sauce like this one, I highly recommend it!! Your taste buds will thank-you!! :D

    Thanks Joce :)
I was wondering how to photograph it too, but after seeing it cooling in the glass containers with some sun coming through the window I lucked out with the picture! :)

I bookmarked this sauce Shona, it looks and sounds amazing! I'm interested to hear about the Pasticcio recipe, the picture almost looks like a dough on top, but is it cheese? Plus I have never heard of any of those macaroni's. I love Greek food and can't wait to hear how it all turns out :)

Thanks Manella! The sauce was easy but the pasticcio is probably a little more work than making lasagna! ;)

Michelle, I couldn't find that pasta either, but any long tubular pasta works like rigatoni or penne. So I'm using penne. The topping is like a thick béchamel sauce but is made sturdy by the eggs. I've eyed up so many recipes online and they are all slightly different. This one uses a lot of eggs, so I might try and cut that down a bit!

I forgot to mention above that I researched the type of tomatoes called for in the Greek Meat Sauce and it's the same as a can of plum tomatoes packed in puree. So I used that and crushed them in a food processor.

Linda, we think alike! It took me all the will power I have to NOT eat this on pizza tonight! Lol!! ( I needed to make sure I had enough for the pasticcio tomorrow! ;) But one day, I will use this on pizza dough! :D Yum!

Thanks Cheryl, I love Italian sauces but every once in awhile I crave a Greek style sauce! It's different, but oh so delicious!
Linda, I caved!! I used a little bit of the sauce as a dip with leftover cheese pizza.....it was soooooo good!! ;)
