Pasticcio

    Made for IMI's January 2018 Pasta/Rice Challenge
    Pasticcio by Nikchick

Where to start with this recipe! It was a hard one to rate and review, so bear with me ;)
As I reviewed earlier, the Greek Meat Sauce for this recipe is awesome, and I would for sure make it again! (use for pasta, moussaka, papoutsakis etc..)
However, this Pasticcio is not something I would make again. It was really the white sauce only that I wouldn't make again. It calls for 6 whole eggs! When I make the white sauce for moussaka it only uses two egg yolks. I had a feeling that with 6 whole eggs it would be way too eggy tasting, so I used 3 whole eggs. And it was still too eggy for me! My DH loved it though! The kids were a little indifferent but ate it all. I had to scrape off the topping!
When you search GR for pasticcio you get 4 recipes, and 12 recipes for pastitsio, and several more if you search for Greek pasta or lasagna. Most of them use a regular béchamel or a cheesy béchamel and I'd rather go for that or use the standard Greek Besamel with egg yolks as you only get the egginess from the egg whites. If you love soufflé then you'd probably like the topping as written!
I also halved the eggs in the pasta, again it used 6 eggs but I used 3. The pasta and the sauce were great though!
I baked it for 40 minutes instead of 75 minutes, I guess mine baked quicker with the less eggs. It smelled so good while baking as the sauce is so deliciously fragrant!
I gave it for stars because I averaged out the family consensus!
I would use the meat sauce for a pastitsio again but just use a different white sauce!

Oh, and for assembly it wasn't too bad. Since I made the sauce 2 days before, that helped! I cooked the pasta and sat that aside to drain and cool slightly while I made the white sauce. And I had a strong person around to help hold up pots while assembling it all. Definitely a weekend feast! I served it with a Greek salad. No bread needed as it's very filling!

It turned out looking awesome Shona!! Good call on cutting back on the eggs, if 3 was too many I can't imagine what 6 would be like! I think I would like the topping if it was souffle like, but my family maybe not. That's great that everyone ate it up though and that your husband loved it so much :) :)
