Hockey/Playoff Party Recipes?

  • kidaria 17 years ago
    Hi Everyone,
I am so happy to see this group has grown. How is everyone enjoying the playoffs? Sadly Vancouver is out. Does anyone have any special playoff/party recipes they would like to share? We're Canadian and we're all 'very polite'-LOL

I wished I had seen this thread before now! My husband and a bunch of his buds have had the same hockey pool/draft for 25 years! They have a trophy and the winner each year puts a plaque on it naming the first place and second place winner for the year. They do this twice a year because they have a season draft and a play off draft. They have such a blast and that's basically now how they've kept in touch with each other over the years. Some of them see each other throughout the year for other things, like my husband sees one of the guys alot because they are in the same band, and in other cases guys are brothers-in-law or work together or whatever. But these guys know that twice a year they'll get together!

These drafts have been primarily at our house for the past 10 years. I plan my foods for a few days before based on what I know they've loved in previous years and on the day of the draft I come straight home from work and start cooking. I make probably about 10 different types of appetizers/party foods and the guys just pig out! There is hardly ever a smell on one of the plates when it comes back up to the kitchen so if I want something I have to take it before the plate goes down to the family room! Usually though I get full just making the stuff (as you know happens!) About 4 years ago I had some pumpkin pie left from Thanksgiving that I wanted to get rid of so I cut it into bite-sized pieces and sent a plate down -- that's when I realized these guys like sweets too!! Now I make sure I make them at least one plate of sweets sent down at the end of the evening.

The guys are always so appreciative! They think they are putting me out all the time and are almost embarrassed that I make them what I do. But I just love to do it and I've never had such an appreciative bunch of eaters, not even the 3 sons I raised! Every year my husband says "I'll just put out a few bags of chips..." Doesn't he know by now that just ain't gonna happen??

This year we missed the play off draft as we were in Kelowna and they held it at someone else's house. I really missed it!

I'll get my appetizer books out and put a few of my tried and true recipes up. I usually make wings (a whole mess of them let me tell you!) but I just generally spice them up with anything I have in the house. One year I didn't have much and I used taco seasoning. They all wanted me to send the recipe home with them to their wives -- but there was no recipe. But even if I use frozen wings from Safeway or Costco I always heat them up in my electric fry pan (so I can keep them warm) and cook them for awhile with sauces and spices. They get fall-off-the-bone-good that way!

Hope I didn't bore anybody with this! These are the types of traditions that make you all warm and fuzzy when you get to be our age! (50s) We will really miss doing it when we retire and move away. Guess then we'll have to start anew where ever we settle down next!

Wow- thank you for your post Auntybea! Too bad the Canucks did not make the playoffs this year. In the years that they did, we often have friends over and have pizza, wings, crudites, appys, gyozas (yes I make them by hand)-LOL. It's like a potluck. Some would bring beverages. Others- dessert and we will take turns going to each other houses. Hope the traditions continues once we have kids!
