What are some of your tips for growing basil?

  One of the best things to have around in your kitchen garden is basil. I was growing some in an old Olive Oil can that had been hollowed out, and I put some holes in the bottom for drainage with a can opener. (I have lots of container gardening books and really used to be "into gardening" when I had my houses and a nice yard!!!)
  If any of you have a can lying around your place you can do the same thing to it.
  I've never been to Italy-but I guess that is often how they grow it there. I'll have to ask my friend Guido who lives there about it too! I'm sure he sould know. He teaches cooking classes there.
  If any of you do grow basil, what are some of the hints you've found to make it thrive?
  You can't make Pesto Genovese without the "green jewel" basil.
