YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE THE MOST? BAKING A CAKE, DECORATING IT AND WATCHING THE KIDS FACES. AND THEN IT'S NOT EVEN FOR A BIRTHDAY. MY ELDEST DAUGHTER ALWAYS ASK ME WHO'S BIRTHDAY IT IS. BUT WHY STICK TO BIRTDAYS FOR CAKES?

I agree! We decorate cakes all the time! We are just about to buy a bundt pan. I saw a cute halloween cake where you take two cakes from a bundt pan mold and put them together to make a pumpkin cake. You would use pumpkin cake batter and frost it orange and draw a Jack O Lantern face on it. I am a cake decorating die hard! Love to do everything from frosting to royal icing to fondant to ganache. My kids love painting dry fondant shapes (made from cookie cutters) with gel food coloring and fondant writers to put on cakes. Good for you!

I just made a Ninja Turtle cake for my son's 18th birthday. He was such a fan when he was little and that is what he requested this year for his cake. I had loads of fun doing it. I also did a grave yard cake for my daughter's 16th birthday, which is today. She loves Halloween and we always seem to do a Halloween themed cake for her birthday. One year I did the Jack O Lantern cake.

I've recently just gotten back into cake decorating. As I was going through my tips I started imagining what I could do next with them. Thanksgiving, hmm.... We have a store a few blocks away from our house that has all kinds of supplies, tips, colors, etc. I can get what I need there and if not from there, then from the Wilton website.

Way back when, in the olden days, when Strawberry Shortcake cartoon characters were the rage, I made, not a SS character, but a cake in the shape of a strawberry, to go along with the rest of the SS decor. I made this for my step-daughter who was probably about 10 at the times. She always seemed to get the short end of the stick with the rest of the family so I always tried to spend extra time with her, doing things just for her and when her birthday came along, we had a nice, but simple, Strawberry Shortcake party for her.
I had a pan for making the skirt for a doll cake and used it to make the strawberry, decorating it with red frosting, using whatever tip might have made a star design, and then added little yellow flecks for strawberry seeds.
I still have such fond memories of how happy she was, just to get her own party and getting such nice things and a cake, just for HER, which she rarely had.
It will always be one of my most cherished moments, to see the sparkle in her eyes and how genuinely happy she was.
Sometimes you don't have to do much, which the cake really wasn't, but it can be the thought that counts.

I saw the silicone pumpkin cake mold a while back and thought of how nice it would look. I think the same thing could also be done with a bundt pan, making maybe two half cakes and frosting them together, IF you don't have the pumpkin mold, or want to buy the pumpkin pan.
I think it's so much fun to do cakes for the various seasons. Maybe we could figure out how to turn one of those into a turkey cake for Thanksgiving! HMMMMMMMMM
