Your story....

The story of your Mother-in-law was very touching.
Was first group I joined here. My family history is
very similar yet different. First my Mother's parents. They came to Detroit and opened a butcher shop in the St. Hedwig neighborhood. During the depression my Grandfather gave away most of his goods to starving new American poles. My Grandpa cooked in the basement and Grandma had the ground floor kitchen. Many Poles will relate to this. Well enough for now...to be continued

Thank you TheIriss and yes, there are many Poles who can relate to your families experience. My Father-in-law was only 14 and with the Polish Army. His troop was caught and taken to the concentration camp in Auschwitz. He was very fortunate to have survived but the horrific memories of torture, starvation and death remain in his memory forever. When my Mother-in-law and her family were finally able to reside in England as DP's(displaced persons) she took in roomers. She would charge them room and board and set it aside in a bank account specifically for them. Then when they left to move into homes of their own, she gave them all the money they had paid to her. She was a beautiful person inside and out and is very much missed. My Mother-in-law had her kitchen on the main floor but did most of the cooking in the basement kitchen. Thank you for sharing with the group TheIriss!

Lor, you will not believe how sim. stories are. They also had apartments and rented out to young couple. Very tiny apartment. They stayed there many years and had 8!!! children. My Grandpa did same thing with rent, gave it back and found them home. 3 years ago we went to visit grandparents grave and there was a card sealed in a zip lock there. Was from youngest daughter of the brood. She was thanking them for survival, said otherwise never would have happened. what a great strong heritage we come from. Have since met the message leaver and hubby and have become part of our family.

Your story has given me chills all over and isn't it interesting the similarities!!! That was such a lovely gesture of the young woman who left a card at your grandparents grave sites. My Father-in-law tends to my dear Mother-in-laws grave site constantly and is meticulous when it comes to the flowers and grass around it. I know it may sound a little depressing to some people but that is his way. We miss dear Lucy so very much and wish she was still here. She had such a kind and understanding way about her and the world would certainly be a better place with more people like her. Your grandparents seemed to be very similar. Lucy was from a little town that bordered on both Polish and Ukrainian countries. The Russian troops came in and took everything that people owned, even their lives. Then Russia claimed this little town as part of Ukrainia. Such interesting stories to be told and so they should be. Please take care and many thanks for sharing with us.
