Lefse

'tis the season for lefse. Not that we shouldn't enjoy lefse all year long but it seems more common around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Is this delight part of your holiday? What are some other cultural favorites that you or your family enjoy for the holidays?

Lefse? A bsolutely a part of our holiday, spread with butter and sprinkled liberally with white or brown sugar. I have a lefse griddle, but have never seemed to be able to master it...I figure it's something I can work on in my retirement!

Here's a question - do/did ANY of you celebrate Christmas Eve with "Dip in the Kettle"??? Was this a tradition my Swedish great-grandma made up and managed to fool us with for all those years?? I have never run into anyone else who knows of or celebrated that tradition (and I grew up in Swede counrty in MN - with a lot of Germans, Welsh and Norwegians thrown in for good measure).

Some of my mother/grandmother's "Swedish" holiday traditions:
lutefisk (sorry, I can't stand the stuff), lefse, fattigman, Swedish bread ring (I can't recall the "official" Scandinavian name right at the moment), herring, sardines, cheeses galore, Swedish potato sausage, Swedish rye bread, krumkake (where did you think I got my name from?!), smoked fish of any kind, warm rice pudding (with a single almond in it, of course), and naturally, there had to be some kind of jello concoction with lots of fruit in it and some kind of "dressing" spread over it! That's all I can think of offhand, though I'm sure I'm missed plenty.

I should have checked back sooner. My grandmother used to make fattigman, and krumkake for the holidays every year. I have no idea where her recipes ended up but it would be wonderful to get the originals from the rest of our family.

Oh, no we never did celebrate with "Dip in the Kettle." What did this tradition entail?
