Pita Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 c lukewarm water .
  • 1 tsp sugar .
  • 1 (4 oz) package dried yeast .
  • 3 1/2 c plain flour .
  • 2 tbsps olive oil

Directions
  • Step #1 Place the yeast, sugar & 1 1/2 c lukewarm water in bowl & stir until dissolved.
  • Step #2 Leave in a warm place for 10 mins, or until bubbles appear on the surface.
  • Step #3 The mixture should be frothy & slightly increased in volume.
  • Step #4 If your yeast doesn't foam it is dead & you will have to start again.
  • Step #5 Process the flour, yeast mixture & oil in a food processor/blender for 30 seconds, or until the mixture forms a ball.
  • Step #6 Or, if you prefer, place the ingredients in a bowl & mix with a wooden spoon, or with your hand, until the mixture forms a smooth dough.
  • Step #7 Turn the dough onto a well-floured surface & knead until smooth & elastic.
  • Step #8 Place in a well-oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, then a tea towel & leave in a warm place for 20 mins, or until almost doubled in size.
  • Step #9 Punch down the dough & divide into a (2 inch) thick round.
  • Step #10 Place on greased baking trays & brush well with water.
  • Step #11 Stand & allow to rise for another 20 mins.
  • Step #12 Preheat the oven to very hot (500°).
  • Step #13 If the dough has dried, brush again with water.
  • Step #14 Bake for 4-5 mins.
  • Step #15 The pita bread should be soft & pale, slightly swollen, & hollow inside.
  • Step #16 Eat warm.
