How to make it

  • In a large cast iron skillet, stir together the sugar, margarine (butter will scorch), and evaporated milk.
  • Cook the mixture until it is brown, being very careful not to scorch.
  • Let the mixture cool.
  • Add the milk, flour, and egg yolks (save the whites for use in your favorite meringue recipe) and blend well.
  • Cook until the mixture is thick like pudding.
  • Pour into a 9" baked pie shell.
  • Top with the meringue and bake according to your meringue recipe instructions.
