How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease a 4cm deep 30cmx22cm tin and line it with baking paper.
  • Sift flour and bicarb soda and the spices and set aside. Combine buttermilk and orange juice. Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl. Stir in treacle, then beat in eggs, one at a time. Add flour and spices alternately with the milk and orange juice, a third at a time, ending with flour.
  • Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 50 minutes until cake tests clean. (Test with a straw or toothpick). Cool on a wire rack before turning out. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
