How to make it

  • Sauté onions in oil until light brown.
  • Add 1 cup water with rice, salt and kelp then mix well and cover and cook 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat then cool slightly and add remaining spices.
  • Place 1 generous teaspoon of filling onto each grape leaf.
  • Make one fold up from base of leaf then tuck in sides and roll up tightly.
  • Place in heavy saucepan and fold down packing rolls tightly.
  • Add remaining water and lemon juice then cook slowly over low heat for 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot or cold.
