How to make it

  • 1. Add half of the sliced onions to the slow cooker and place the pork shoulder on top of them making sure to remove the layer of fat on the underside of the shoulder. Add the brown sugar and the remaining onions and pour root beer all over everything making sure it coats well.
  • 2. Either cook on low for 6-7 hours or cook on high 2 hrs, then turn to low for another 2 hrs or so. Flip pork halfway through cooking so that it cooks evenly if desired. I was at work so it didn't get flipped.
  • 3. Pour or ladle out the root beer leaving a little bit to make it extra sweet. Shred pork and remove any unwanted fat before adding the BBQ sauce. Add 1.5 to 2 bottles of your favorite BBQ sauce. I used some homemade sauce with a little bit of kick and it was the most amazing sweet n' spicy flavor. Cook on low for about an hour and enjoy.
