How to make it

  • Topping: In a roomy bowl,mix flour,sugar,baking powder,and cinnamon or nutmeg. Work cold butter into the mixture with your fingers or a fork until it resembles coarse crumbs. Combine the egg and milk. Add to flour mixture,stirring just to moisten and combine.
  • Filling:In a saucepan,combine the sugar and cornstarch. Add the water. Stir in the blackberries. Cook on low-medium heat and stir until thickened and bubbly. Keep warm while you make topping.
  • Pour filling into greased 8x8" baking dish. Drop the topping in mounds atop the hot filling.
  • Bake at 400' for 20-25 mins until topping is golden brown and a toothpick inserted(just into topping)comes out clean
  • Serve warm with frozen yogurt or ice cream,if desired.
