How to make it

  • Pulse the walnuts and their sugar about 8 times in a food processor. There should be both fine walnut powder and chunks.
  • In a bowl, combine the nuts with all the other ingredients except the butter.
  • Using your fingers, rub the butter quickly into the dry ingredients. Wash your hands first in cold water, and repeat if necessary.
  • Use to top fruit pies, coffee cakes, fruit crisps. If it seems to be getting too brown before your dessert is done baking, lay a piece of aluminum foil lightly across the topping.
