Ingredients

How to make it

  • Grease and base-line a 7"-8"cake tin. Preheat a moderately hot oven, 375F, 190C, gask mark 5. Sieve the flour, salt and cloves into a bowl, cut in the butter and rub in until the mixture is like fine breadcrumbs. Peel and core the applies, slice thinly, add to the rubbed in mixture - with the sugar - the amount depends on how much sweetening the apples need. Mix in the egg and enough milk to make a fairly stiff dough, then turn the mixture into the prepared tin and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake in the preheated over for 30-40 minutes, or until crisp, golden brown and springy to the touch. Best of all served warm with chilled creme fráiche

This is fantastic! It's so quick and easy to pull together, and simply delicious! I used just an 1/8 tsp of cloves, and 1/8 tsp of nutmeg. I wish I had crème fraiche to go along side, instead I served it with some whipped cream. The warm cake would be great served with ice cream or some custard poured over, yum!
It's 5 stars in taste!! But I'm giving it 4 because the ingredient list and directions could be cleaned up to make it easier to follow. *The bottom line of the ingredient list should read ~a little milk to mix~ separate line~ Sugar to sprinkle over. At first I thought I had to add milk to the sugar, lol ;). Still a great recipe that shouldn't be overlooked for that!!

I haven't been here much during the summer months but I came in to check on the group and noticed your excellent recipe. Because I am a wee bit Irish, and because your recipe looks delish, I'm giving you a much deserved 5 forks.
P.S. Well I'd like to give you 5 forks but it appears I must make and taste before I am able to rate. You've got my 5 forks anyway ;)
