Vasilopita / St. Basil's Pie

- 4 cups of flour shopping list
- 4 teaspoons of baking powder shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt shopping list
- 1 cup of butter shopping list
- 2 cups of sugar shopping list
- 5-6 eggs shopping list
- 1 teaspoon of mahlepi (mahleb/ mahlab) shopping list
- 1 teaspoon of mastic shopping list
- 1 cup of milk shopping list
- powdered/icing sugar shopping list
How to make it
- Sift the flour and baking powder inside a pot, adding the salt.
- Inside a mixer mix the mahlepi spice with the mastic and a tablespoon of flour.
- Add the mixture to the pot with the flour and the baking powder.
- In another pot mix the sugar with the butter, and add the eggs.
- Then add the flour mixture and the milk.
- Grease the pan which you are going to use to bake the pie with some butter.
- Pour the final mixture inside the baking pan.
- (At this point you can place a coin in silver foil and add it in the mixture. This is part of a Greek custom. It is not relevant to the cooking process)
- Bake at 180 C (about 360 F) for 45 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and wait until it reaches room temperature.
- Then sprinkle the top of the pie with powdered sugar.
