How to make it

  • Heat water and butter to just below boiling.
  • Mix flour, sugar, cardamom, yeast, and egg in a standing mixer.
  • Add warm water and mix on medium speed for five minutes until dough is stiff.
  • Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise until dough has doubled in size.
  • Roll the dough out like a sausage and cut into five oz pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a ball and put them on a non-stick sheet pan.
  • Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  • Bake for 15 minutes in 375 degree oven. Let cool.
  • Mix powdered sugar and water (use small amounts until proper consistency is achieved) to make icing and place in a shallow dish.
  • Push dents into the buns, not all the way through (like for bialys).
  • Dip bread in icing (hole side down) and sprinkle with shredded coconut.
  • Squeeze or spoon vanilla custard inside of hole.
