Old Fashioned Beet Borscht

- 1/2 head of a solid green cabbage cubed shopping list
- 4-5 large red beets, cleaned, peeled and cubed shopping list
- 2 large carrots cut into rings shopping list
- 1 large onion coarse chopped shopping list
- 2 cloves garlic smashed shopping list
- 2 large bay leaves shopping list
- 2 large meaty red tomatoes diced shopping list
- optional: 1 large potato peeled and cubed shopping list
- 1/2 cup white sugar or to taste shopping list
- 1/2 cup red wine vinegar or to taste shopping list
- 1/2 tsp citric acid ( sour salt ) or to taste shopping list
- 6- 8 cups water, vegetable or beef broth to cover vegetables shopping list
How to make it
- Place everything in a crockpot
- Cook low or high power until vegetables are tender
- Reseason to taste with sugar, vinegar, salt and fresh grated black pepper to taste
- Serve this hot or cold as desired
- A dollop of sour cream and a spring of fresh dill to garnish soup bowls
