How to make it

  • Make dough:
  • combine flour, salt, sugar
  • cut in butter to make crumbs
  • Blend in egg and vanilla to make a dough ( use a fork to combine very well - it will stick together )
  • Cover and let rest 30 minutes in the refrigerator or cool place to firm up dough for easier handling
  • Roll dough out dough on a floured surface to fit a well buttered round tart pan ( 24-26 cm ) with removable bottom
  • Note: I rolled the dough between sheets of floured wax paper, was easier that way for me to do
  • Place and press dough into pan and up sides
  • Preheat oven to 400F
  • Meanwhile peel and slice apples
  • Place apple slices in a concentric pattern to cover the dough , filling in all spaces as best as possible
  • Sprinkle apples with a little fresh lemon juice and some chopped candied nuts if desired
  • Bake in center oven rack 30+ minutes or apples tender and crust is pale golden
  • Meanwhile heat the marmalade with the juice or liquer and stir smooth
  • Remove cake from oven, and pour on evenly the glaze
  • Let cool completely
  • If desired sprinkle with powdered sugar and top pieces with whipped cream
