Ingredients
  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 Tablespoon grated lemon rind
  • 6 Tablespoons finely chopped walnuts
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar

Directions
  1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt onto wax paper.
  2. Beat margarine with sugar, eggs and lemon rind in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Stir in flour mixture. Chill 3 hours or until firm enough to handle.
  3. Roll dough between palms of hands, a level tablespoon at a time, into balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten slightly with bottom of greased and sugared glass.
  4. Combine walnuts with remaining 2 Tablespoons sugar. Sprinkle each cookie with nut topping, pressing into top of cookie.
  5. Bake in a moderate oven at 350° F for 12 minutes or until edges of cookies begin to brown. Cool on wire racks. Makes 4½ dozen cookies.
