Ingredients

3 cups sifted all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 Tablespoon grated lemon rind

6 Tablespoons finely chopped walnuts

2 Tablespoons sugar

Directions

Sift flour, baking powder and salt onto wax paper.

Beat margarine with sugar, eggs and lemon rind in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Stir in flour mixture. Chill 3 hours or until firm enough to handle.

Roll dough between palms of hands, a level tablespoon at a time, into balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten slightly with bottom of greased and sugared glass.

Combine walnuts with remaining 2 Tablespoons sugar. Sprinkle each cookie with nut topping, pressing into top of cookie.

Bake in a moderate oven at 350° F for 12 minutes or until edges of cookies begin to brown. Cool on wire racks. Makes 4½ dozen cookies.
