This is a very quick and simple stew to make when you go camping.It is really good, when your outdoors in the fresh air and you work up your appetite. You can also make this at home on the stovetop.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped cabbage
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 1 can (16oz ) stewed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 1/2 oz) kidney beans
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • -------DUMPLINGS-------
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk

Directions
  1. In a dutch oven, cook and stir meat until light brown;drain.
  2. Add onion, cabbage and celery; cook and stir until vegetables are light brown. Stir in tomatoes, kidney beans (with liquid), water and seasonings.
  3. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat; simmer while preparing dough for dumplings.
  4. ---------Dumplings-------
  5. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture looks like coarse meal. Stir in milk to form dough.
  6. Drop dough by spoofuls onto simmeing stew. Cook uncovered 10 minutes; cover and cook 10 minutes longer.
