Here is a great way to prepare a ham roast. Very tasty. When I prepare this ham, I add butter to the brown sugar and mustard mixture. The original recipe does not call for butter. From: Tom Fitzmorris a noted New Orleans food critic.

Ingredients
  • 1 (4 lb.) cured smoked ham
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard (optional)
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp. butter
  • 24 ounces Root beer (2 cans)
  • 1 tablespoon tabasco
  • 6 cloves (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 orange juice and zest of
  • 1/2 lemon, rind or zest of

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Place the ham in a broiling pan and cut shallow slits in a criss-cross pattern across the top half.
  3. Combine brown sugar, dry mustard and butter and pat it all over the ham.
  4. Put the ham in the oven.
  5. Combine all the other ingredients in a saucepan.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower to a simmer, and cook until the liquid volumne is reduced to about one cup.
  7. Strain.
  8. Spoon some of the glaze over the top of the ham.
  9. Spoon more glaze, at 15-minute intervals, until it is all gone.
  10. Continue baking until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 160-degrees on a meat thermometer.
  11. Remove from oven and allow to rest for about one hour before carving.

Oh I bet this is good, I did a version once with Dr. Pepper and it was awesome!


Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek... I forgot to add the butter as an ingredient!!! Good thing you commented Jo_Jo_Ba because I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. The original recipe does not call for butter. The butter is now added ;-)
