How to make it

  • Cream together the shortening and sugar, add egg and mix until blended.
  • Stir in bananas and sourdough starter.
  • Add orange peel or vanilla.
  • Stir flour and measure again with salt, baking powder and soda.
  • Add flour mixture and walnuts to the first mixture, stirring until just blended.
  • Pour into greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
  • Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool to cold before slicing.

    I made this over the weekend and it was a huge success. I did the vanilla variation, but I'm sure the orange would have been just as good. I did have to omit the nuts, braces in the household. The bread was very moist with great flavor. I did let my batter sit for an hour just to have a little more of the sourdough twang. It was just enough. I can't tell you about shelf life however, because my family devoured it in about a day and a half. I'm waiting for my bananas to go soft so I can make another loaf. By the way my starter is "Carl Griffith's 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter."
