From lindacm 16 years agoIngredients
- 1 lb. lean ground beef shopping list
- 2 tsp olive oil shopping list
- 1 large onion, finely chopped shopping list
- 2 cloves of garlic, chopped shopping list
- pepper to taste (no salt required) shopping list
- 1/4 tsp clove powder (optional) shopping list
- ¼ tsp nutmeg shopping list
- ¼ tsp cinnamon shopping list
- 1 tsp dried oregano shopping list
- 1 tbsp dried parsley or 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley shopping list
- ½ cup ground tomatoes or 2 tbsp tomato paste shopping list
- 1 cup cold water shopping list
- ½ cup crumbled Greek feta shopping list
- 1 package filo dough (about 16 sheets) shopping list
- oil for filo shopping list
How to make it
- Over medium heat in a large non-stick pot, brown beef until no longer pink. Drain fat and put beef aside.
- Sauté onion in olive oil until wilted then add garlic and cook another minute
- Return beef to onions & garlic and mix well with herbs and spices
- Add ground tomatoes and water and mix well.
- Simmer mixture until liquid has reduced and thickened (about 20 minutes). Do not cover. You don’t want the mixture too soupy or else the filo will get wet.
- Once cooked, stir in the Greek feta until it is equally distributed. Simmer for a couple of minutes.
- Pre-heat oven to 350ºF
- Making the pies:
- On a large cutting surface, place 2 filo sheets (lengthwise), one on top of the other. Cover the remainder with damp towel to avoid drying out.
- Divide the rectangle into 3 using a sharp knife or pizza cutter
- Using a pastry brush, spread a bit of oil over the sheets
- For each rectangle, take 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture and place it on the shortest end. Roll 2 sheets together towards the top to form a log. Tuck the long edges towards the centre as you roll to enclose the log.
- Place seam-side down on baking sheet and brush with a little bit of oil.
- Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Love this too. Is this a Cretan recipe? In Cyprus we do them a bit different, ground pork, parsley, cinnamon etc. Shall try these soon.
