  • OLD NEWSPAPER
  • SAND OR SALT
  • FOUR MARGARINE TUBS
  • FOOD COLORING OR POWDERED TEMPERA PAINT
  • BABY-FOOD JARS WITH LABELS REMOVED -- ONE PER CHILD
  • FOUR SPOONS
  • PENCILS
  • CONSTRUCTION PAPER SCRAPS
  • SCISSORS
  • GLUE

Directions
  1. 1. Cover table with newspaper. Separate sand or salt into the four margarine tubs.
  2. 2. With food coloring or powdered tempera paint, dye the sand or salt in each bowl a different color.
  3. 3. Carefully spoon one color of snd into a baby-food jar to make a layer about 1 inch deep.
  4. 4. With the spoon, pat the sand firmly in the jar.
  5. 5. Make three or four layers using the other colros. Make sure to pack after each color.
  6. 6. To intermingle the differnt colors, poke a pencil or small wire down the sides of the jar.
  7. 7. Decorate the top of the jar in any fashion. Can be used as a paperweight.
