Italian Cookies Recipe

Italian Cookies Recipe
This is my all time favorite cookie. It isn't especially pretty, I have actually had people turn their noses up to it, but it is rich and spicy, and fun to make with children.

Ingredients
  • **Wet ingredients**
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1/4 C. shortening, melted
  • **Dry ingredients**
  • 3 1/4 C. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground clove
  • 1/2 C. cocoa
  • 1 1/4 Tb. baking powder
  • **glaze**
  • 2 C. powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/8 C. milk

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix "wet" ingredients in one bowl and "dry" ingredients in another.
  3. Mix wet and dry together in largest bowl and add in 1/2 C. chopped nuts (pecan or walnuts work best)
  4. Grease hands with shortening, and roll 1 Tb. of dough between hands to form into small balls.
  5. Bake on a cookie sheet in hot oven for 20 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven and let rest on baking sheet for 1 minute.
  7. Roll hot cookies in glaze and place on a wire rack to cool. (Note: place a piece of wax or parchment paper to catch the drips from the cookies and make clean up easier.)
  8. **When you mix the glaze ingredients together, it should have the consistency of white craft glue, and you may need to make more to coat all of the cookies.
