Ingredients
  • 112 c. molasses(reg. or unsulphured)
  • 1c. brown sugar,firmly packed
  • 2/3c cold water
  • 1/3c veg. shortening
  • 7c. all purpose flour
  • 2t. baking soda
  • 1t. salt
  • 1t. ground allspice
  • 2t.powdered ginger
  • 1/2t ground cloves
  • 1t. ground cinnamon

Directions
  1. Mix molasses, brown sugar, water and shortening together in a large bowl until well blended(mixer works best for this step). In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking soda, salt and spices. Gradually add dry ingredients to molasses mixture
  2. The dough will be stiff,so you may find it easier to mix by hand. Form into a ball, cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 359
  3. Roll the dough to 1/8" thickness on a floured surface. Cut out the dough with your favorite cookie cutters. Bake for 8-9 mins.(8 for smaller cookies,9 for larger). Let cool before icing.
  4. To prepare icing; sift the powdered sugar into a bowl and add enough water to form a nice frosting consistency.
