This is a great icing for decorating. You can do a lot of variations with the taste. Some people find it rich, but it is great for birthday cakes. This is the Wilton Buttercream Recipe.

You can also use 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening, rather than full shortening. This gives a nice butter flavor. I would still use pure shortening for hot weather and for any heavy duty decorating like roses, clowns, flowers, things that need a lot of body to stay up.

When living up north I decorated cakes for extra money.. and this was the recipe... it is soooo good.. I have used the butter flavored Crisco and it worked great, but, it is not pure white then... but tasty..
