How to make it

  • Heat oven to 350.
  • Butter 3 nonstick 8" cake pans
  • Combine cake mix, water, eggs, oil, sour cream, vanilla and kosher salt in bowl of mixer.
  • Fit with paddle attachment and beat on low speed until well blended.
  • Increase speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes then stir in chocolate chips.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake 25 minutes.
  • To make icing put chocolate chips in metal bowl of a stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment.
  • Combine sugar, milk, butter and salt in medium saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil.
  • Stir occasionally then allow to boil vigorously for exactly 1 minute.
  • Pour hot sugar mixture over chocolate then add vanilla.
  • Beat on medium speed for 10 to 15 minutes.
