Poppyseed Buchta

- 1 cake yeast shopping list
- 3 Tbsp sugar shopping list
- 1/3 cup butter shopping list
- 1/3 cup scalded milk shopping list
- 1 tsp vanilla shopping list
- 2 eggs, beaten shopping list
- 2- 1/2 cups sifted flour shopping list
- Poppyseed Filling: shopping list
- 1 can prepared poppyseed filling or 3/4 cup popyseed, ground and cooked with 1/2 cup milk, 4 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp butter, and 1/2 tsp vanilla. shopping list
How to make it
- Soften yeast in 1 Tbsp sugar.
- Add remaining sugar, salt, and butter to scalded milk - stir until well blended - cool to lukewarm.
- Add yeast, eggs, and vanilla - stir together.
- Add flour to make soft dough.
- Turn onto lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.
- Place in lightly greased bowl, cover with warm damp clothand let rise until doubled.
- Turn out on lightly floured surface and roll into rectangle about 12x18-inches.
- Cut into 3 equal parts - down the length.
- Divide fillin ginto 3 equal parts.
- Spread filling evenly over 3 pieces of dough.
- Roll each piece of dough - jelly roll style - you should have 3 long pices of rolled dough.
- Braid rolls loosely to form twist and place in greased loaf or tube pan.
- Brush top with melted lard and let rise until doubled.
- Bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees.

I have a poppyseed filling on hand which I need to use. Feels like Fall today, and will commence with this Braided Poppyseed Coffeecake. ( what does "buchta" translate as? thank you for a recipe with less fat than usual. this will be fun!! 55555...more
