How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees
  • In a small sauce pan, melt sugar over medium heat until the sugar is a adark caramel colored liquid, stirring constantly.
  • Pour into a 4 cup ring mold. Let cool so that the caramel hardens.
  • Put remaining ingredients (except the butterscotch pieces) in a blender and mix well.
  • Pour this mixture into the ring mold over the hardened caramel.
  • Put this mold inside a larger pan with with water 1/2 inch deep.
  • Bake one hour.
  • Very carefully remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool ust enough to be able to remove the flan pan from the water getting burnt.
  • Refrigerate and chill.
  • To serve, cover the top of the mold with a large plate, and flip.
  • The caramel will drizzle down the set custard.
  • Sprinkle the top with the butterscotch pieces to mimic gold nuggets!
