This is what I grew up with as Goulash. Being from the Ozark hills, I doubt if it is anything like the Hungarian kind. This is a warm cozy standby and this is the first time I actually put it on paper. That bowl you see is what I had for dinner to... More

This sounds like how my mom used to make it. Right before serving she would melt cheese on top. YUM!

The Minnesota version that I grew up on doesn't have the spices or chopped peppers. We cut up 6 to 8 slices of cooked bacon and throw it in. Sounds very good and I've bookmarked it.

Oh yeah this is the stuff. Thanks for a great post. I'll be making this in a couple of weeks.

Hey, I find myself here again while randomly bouncing around.
I love this hotdish. That's what we call it up here. Any goulash with tomatoes in it is called a hotdish by we Scandihoovians.
No tomatoes and it's a casserole.
I've never looked the three words up. Maybe the tomato thing is mentioned.
These regional things are kind of neat, aren't they? My brother-in-law from Mo uses the term goulash.

This is what I grew up with too, must be a Midwest fare. I fix it quite often. Do you eat bread with yours? I butter the bread and heap some goulash into it and fold it in half (or pocketbook as we call it) Great post:o)

That is too funny alaska. Of course we eat it with bread and butter. I should've put that on the recipe. And yes, I hate to admit it, but I have eaten it like a "pocketbook". Makes me want to make another batch.

I was born and raised on a farm 68 years ago in Iowa, so it was homemade cooking for us and I've had to basiclly go back to those days, so to speak, what with this Celiac Disease.....
I'm on a REAL strict Income and can't afford the high cost of Gluten-Free foods, so HAD to go back to the basics and do it all from the begining like our mom's did and grandma's.....

Awesome comfort food dish! This is different from what I grew up with, but I can't wait to try it. Never had it w/ cumin; does it make it a little Mexican-y? ;o) My one pot wonder is more Italian-y, I'll share as soon as I can write it up. Thanks, again, for a super share! Blessings, deb
