How to make it

  • Soak gelatin in cold water and set aside.
  • Scald milk then add sugar and cornstarch and stir until smooth. Add beaten egg yolks then cook in top of a double boiler until thick stir constantly.
  • Stir in dissolved gelatin.
  • Divide custard into halves.
  • Add chocolate and vanilla to one half.
  • Pour into a baked pie shell.
  • Cool remaining half of custard.
  • Beat egg whites and cream of tartar and slowly add 1/2 cup of sugar then blend with cooled custard.
  • Spread over top of chocolate layer.
  • Chill in refrigerator.
  • Whip cream and sweeten with powdered sugar.
  • Top custard with sweetened whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle grated chocolate on top of whipped cream.
  • Chill well before serving.
