How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Grind oats in blender to a fairly fine consistency.
  • In large bowl or in food processor mix oats with flour, salt and baking soda.
  • Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • In small bowl dissolve honey in warm water.
  • Slowly blend sweetened water into flour mixture until dough holds together in a cohesive ball.
  • Divide dough into 2 equal portions for rolling.
  • On a floured surface or pastry cloth then roll thin.
  • Cut out 2" crackers with a cookie cutter and arrange on lightly greased baking sheet.
  • With tines of a fork prick each cracker 2 or 3 times then bake 10 minutes.
  • Turn crackers over and bake 10 minutes or until very lightly browned.
  • Cool the crackers on a rack.
