Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Meringue

- 3 to 4 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced shopping list
- water shopping list
- 1/3 cup sugar shopping list
- 2 tbsp butter shopping list
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg shopping list
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon shopping list
- 1 tbsp lemon juice shopping list
- 3 eggs shopping list
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp vanilla shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Place apples in medium saucepan with about inch of water. Cok until apples are soft.
- Put 2 heaping cups of apples in mixing bowl. Stir in sugar, butter, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lemon juice
- Separate eggs yolks from egg whites. Beat egg yolks. Add the apple mixture, beat well.
- Grease a 9 inch square baking pan. Pour mixture into greased pan. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, put egg whites into a medium bowl. Beat eggs whites until stiff. Slowly add powdered sugar and vanilla. Continue to beat until completely mixed in, but stays stiff.
- Remove apple miture from oven after 15 minutes, pour meringue over top all the way to the edges.
- Reduce oven temp to 325 degrees. Return pan to oven.
- Bake until meringu is slightly browned.
- Col and cut into rectangles.
