How to make it

  • Prep the steak by brushing with olive oil and rubbing with salt, pepper, brown sugar, and if your feeling a little adventurous, some thyme leaves. then set it aside for a bit to let the flavors mingle and penetrate the steak a little whale the grill heats up.
  • At the same time, prep the Asparagus by putting a bit of Balsamic Salad dressing on it, i know it sounds weird but trust me, the flavor is amazing!
  • in the mean time prep your sweet potato by cutting off the ends and washing with water, then place into a microwave safe container with some watter at the bottom (less than a 1/4 inch) and microwave until done (i find that my microwave takes about 6 minutes)
  • once your sweet potato is about 3 minutes in go ahead and place your steak on the grill (broiling will work to, but i don't like it as much) and let it cook for a little bit (the cooking time will depend on how you like you meat, it usually takes only around 12 minutes total if you want it rare) once you flip the steak over (after the first 6 minutes) place the asparagus onto the grill, make sure that they all lay flat onto the grill and that none are piled on top of each other.
  • that done go back and check on the potato, if it needs more time place it back into the microwave for your best guess on the remaining time. you'll know the potato is done when it softens up considerably and you can stab it easily with a fork. don't worry if you potato is done before the steak, this is actually preferable as the potato will be VERY hot when you pull it out.
  • go back and check on the steak and asparagus, test the steak by poking it with a finger or something else, you've cooked it too long if it's like a rock and not enough if it's really soft. when you think your getting close or you just don't know, cut into the top of the steak with a knife and take a peek at the inside, the pinker it is the more rare. the Asparagus will be done when they start to shrivel a little, you can test as you go and cook to the point that you want, i always like them a little crisp, so i usually end up pulling them off before the steak.
  • once it's all done, sit down and enjoy your meal! I'd add a little honey to the sweet potato for flavor, but besides that your all set on spices! (well maybe a bit of salt for the beef, but I'm a salt fiend)
