How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 225C.
  • Peel, core and slice the apples. Mix lemon zest, orange zest, sugar, flour and chopped almonds.
  • In a buttered oven dish, alternate layers of sliced apples with layers of the flour mixture and shave butter between the apple layers (I use a cheese slicer and very cold butter - super quick and no mess).
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10 - 15 mins.
  • Meanwhile, mix all the toffee ingredients in a saucepan and bring it to the boil on low heat.
  • Remove the dish from the oven and pour the toffee topping over the apples. Return to the oven until the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft.
  • Serve warm with softened vanilla ice cream.
