How to make it

  • Soak beans overnight.
  • Place beans, lentils, and water in a large, heavy saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, cover, and cook until beans are tender about 1 1/2 hours
  • Remove from heat.
  • Heat butter in a large nonstick saucepan.
  • Add onion, garlic, ginger, and chilies.
  • Saute until onion is lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Add tomato paste, coriander, cumin, and pepper, stirrring constantly, for about 2 minutes.
  • Add the cooked beans, salt, and milk.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low.
  • Cover and cook until most of the liquid is absorbed, about 7 to 9 minutes.
  • Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro.
  • 255 calories per serving.
