How to make it

  • In a large skillet, over medium heat, sauté onion and shallot in oil or butter until tender.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and add remaining ingredients except ketchup. Blend until sugar is dissolved.
  • Pour into a saucepan and add ketchup.
  • Simmer over low heat for 30 minutes or until sauce reduces to desired consistency. Best if simmered for 2 hours, adding water as needed.
  • Serve on the side with pulled pork or pulled roast beef or combine with pulled meat or baste ribs during last 45 minutes of smoking.
  • Or mix with pulled pork and serve on warm Kaiser rolls with sweet slaw. Garnish with dill pickle spears
