Sweet Barbecue Sauce Recipe
This tomato-based sauce is great for people who like a little milder sauce.

Ingredients
  • 3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or butter
  • 2 Cups chopped onion
  • 1/2 Cup red wine vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large shallot, minced
  • 1/4 Cup yellow mustard
  • 1/2 Cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 Cups water
  • 6 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 Cups ketchup

Directions
  1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, sauté onion and shallot in oil or butter until tender.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and add remaining ingredients except ketchup. Blend until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Pour into a saucepan and add ketchup.
  4. Simmer over low heat for 30 minutes or until sauce reduces to desired consistency. Best if simmered for 2 hours, adding water as needed.
  5. Serve on the side with pulled pork or pulled roast beef or combine with pulled meat or baste ribs during last 45 minutes of smoking.
  6. Or mix with pulled pork and serve on warm Kaiser rolls with sweet slaw. Garnish with dill pickle spears
