Ingredients
  • Cookies
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Icing
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter (or margarine)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla flavor
  • food coloring

Directions
  1. Directions for Cookies:
  2. Beat butter and shortening thoroughly with an electric mixer.
  3. Add sugar, baking powder, the pinch of salt and mix until well combined.
  4. Beat in egg and vanilla then as much flour as you can with the electric mixer; it will get too thick to finish mixing with the electric mixer. You'll have to finish it by hand.
  5. Stir in the remaining flour.
  6. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour.
  7. Split the dough in 1/2 and roll one half at a time. Cut out with cookie cutters.
  8. Keep the piece you aren't using in the fridge.
  9. Bake at 325° F on ungreased cookie sheets for about 7 to 8 minutes, until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned (don't over cook).
  10. Directions for Icing
  11. In a small bowl, stir together the confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until smooth.
  12. Divide into separate bowls, and add food colorings to desired intensity. Spread the icing on the cookies with butter knives.
