Ingredients
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 tsp melted shortening (Greatgram's original recipe calls for lard)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 c butter milk
  • flour enough to roll soft
  • oil to fry in
  • powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar (optional)

Directions
  1. combine all the ingredients.
  2. pinch off dough about the size of two walnuts,
  3. roll, flatten out and make a into a ring.
  4. place in hot oil to fry until golden on both sides.
  5. set aside to drain
  6. sprinkle with sugar if desired while still warm
