Texas Patty Melts Recipe
This is a must at some of our barbecues. The different dressings really set off the taste of these. It helps to have a big mouth as this is a large sandwich when assembled.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 4 (1/4-in-thick) slices red onion
  • olive oil
  • or veg. oil
  • 8 slices purchased frozen buttered garlic Texas toast
  • 4 (1-oz.) slices hot pepper Montery Jack Cheese
  • 1 Tbsp. ranch salad dressing
  • 1 Tbsp. steak sauce

Directions
  1. Heat grill.
  2. Shape ground beef into 4 (4-in.-square) patties.
  3. When ready to grill, place patties on gas grill over med. heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from med. coals.
  4. Cook 13-15 minutes or until thoroughly cooked, turning once.
  5. Meanwhile, brush onion slices with oil.
  6. Add onion to grill during last 5-8 minutes of cooking time; cook onions until tender, turning once.
  7. Prepare bread as directed on package to grill.
  8. Top each patty with cheese slice; cook just until melted.
  9. To serve, place onion slice on each patty on grill.
  10. Spread 1 side of 4 slices of toast with ranch dressing; spread remaining 4 slices of toast with steak sauce.
  11. Top each steak sauce-spread slice of toast with onion topped patty.
  12. Cover each with ranch-spread slice of toast.
  13. Just for kids:
  14. For a milder, kid-friendly flavor, use Montery Jack in place of the pepper cheese.
