Rustic French Beef Casserole

- 2 lb. simmering steak shopping list
- 1 tsp. brown sugar shopping list
- salt and pepper shopping list
- 1 beef stock cube shopping list
- 1 tbsp. flour shopping list
- pinch nutmeg shopping list
- 1 onion shopping list
- 2 cloves garlic shopping list
- 1 tbsp. vinegar shopping list
- 1 tsp. worcestershire sauce shopping list
- 1 tbsp. tomato sauce shopping list
- 2 tbsp. butter shopping list
- 1 tbsp. oil shopping list
- 1 tbsp. flour, extra shopping list
- 1/2 cup water shopping list
- 1/2 cup dry red wine shopping list
- 1 French bread sstick shopping list
- 2 tbsp. butter, extra shopping list
- 2 tsp. French mustard shopping list
How to make it
- Cut meat into 1 " cubes. Combine sugar, salt and pepper, crumbled stock cube, flour, nutmeg, finely chopped onion, crushed garlic, vinegar, worcestershire sauce and tomato sauce. Spoon over meat, cover, leave to marinate 1 hour; stir occasionally.
- Heat butter and oil in pan, add meat and marinade, cook 30 seconds. Stir in wine and water, stir until sauce boils and thickens. Pour sauce over meat, cover, bake in 325 F oven 1 1/4 hours.
- Cut bread stick into 2 " slices. Combine extra butter and mustard, spread on one side of bread slices. Place slices, mustard side up, on top of casserole, push down gently to soak up some of the sauce. Return to moderate oven, cook uncovered further 20 minutes or until top is brown and crisp.
