Yummy chocolate marbled cake! This is one of my Mama's recipes and it's tried and true!

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 Tablespoon shortening
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions
  1. Beat 1/2 cup shortening and butter at medium speed of an electric mixer about 2 minutes or until creamy.
  2. Gradually add sugar, beating mixture at medium speed 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating just until yellow disappears.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture --Mix at low speed just until blended after each addition.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract.
  6. RESERVE 2 cups batter.
  7. Combine chocolate and 1 Tablespoon shortening in a small, heavy saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate melts.
  8. Add chocolate mixture to reserved to RESERVED 2 cups batter, stirring until blended.
  9. Pour one-third of PLAIN batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan; top with half (1/2) of chocolate batter.
  10. Repeat batter layers, ending with plain batter.
  11. Swirl batter with a knife to create a marbled effect; sprinkle top with pecans.
  12. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
  13. Let cool in pan on wire rack 10 to 15 minutes; remove from pan, and let cool completely completely on wire rack.
  14. Yield: one 10-inch cake.
