Paula Deen went to visit Billy and Katie Lee Joel. Paula says, The lady can cook cook! This is one of Katie Lee's recipes. I make Pattie melts but never added an egg, so I tried it. Believe me, this is Superb!

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, half grated, remaining half thinly sliced
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp. freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
  • 12 slices White bread
  • 12 slices American cheese
  • Condiment...pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc. ( optional)

Directions
  1. In a medium bowl, using hands combine beef,grated onion,egg,
  2. salt, pepper and garlic powder. Form into six 4-inch patties.
  3. Spread 1/2 tsp. butter on one side of each bread slice, set aside.
  4. Heat a large heavy-duty skillet over medium- high heat.
  5. Cook burgers, turning once, until cooked through, about 8 minutes.
  6. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to catch grease.
  7. Drain fat from skillet. Add 3 bread slices, buttered side down, and
  8. layer each with 1 cheese slice, onion slice, burger, another cheese
  9. slice and bread, buttered side up.
  10. Cook over medium-low heat, turning once, until bread is
  11. golden brown, about 4 minutes.
  12. Repeat to make 3 more sandwiches.
  13. Serve with Condiments, if desired.
